I arrived in Centerport that afternoon, and before even reaching the pond, I spotted two bald eagles perched together — a promising start to a late-summer shoot.

From there, I made my way down to Mill Pond, where the shorebirds were active in the softening light. Egrets, cormorants, and the occasional passerine gave me plenty to track across the reeds and water.

I ended the day right where I began — with the eagles. They had returned to the area around their nest just after dark, a quiet and fitting close to the afternoon.
